History
The WEB-RADR 1 project sought to create a mobile app for smartphone users to report side effects directly to regulatory authorities. There were three mobile apps rolled out to different regions including the UK (Yellow Card), Croatia (Halmed), and Netherlands (Lareb).
Though collaboration between the MHRA, WHO, and UMC, a generic multi-country version of the app was created for wider adoption. In 2017 the Med Safety mobile app was rolled out in Burkina Faso and Zambia. Since 2017, Med Safety has been deployed in over 20 countries.
Vision
The collection of adverse reaction data can help support the safer use of medicines and vaccines. Med Safety and its associated tools can help improve the collection of this data.
Med Safety and connected applications for collecting and analysing standardised safety data can be adopted by National Regulatory Authorities to help support and conduct vigilance activities in their regions, and ultimately strengthen and contribute to pharmacovigilance worldwide.
Med Safety provides a customisable option for National Regulatory Authorities to collect and manage ADR data, and deliver safety messages. The implementation and maintenance of Med Safety for LMICs is free.
Our organisation and partnerships
The technology behind Med Safety and associated tools is maintained by the MHRA. The MHRA have received funding to provide and continually enhance the tools on a non-for profit basis. The team at the MHRA work collaboratively with stakeholders to enhance the app with additional functionalities. The MHRA team will work closely with Regulatory Agencies to adapt and tailor Med Safety for the country specific needs (implementation, branding, language).
The MHRA is a key technical partner in the African Union- Smart Safety Surveillance (AU-3S) programme to strengthen the safety surveillance of medical products across the African continent. This work is funded by the Gates Foundation.
The initial WEB-RADR project was supported by the Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking (IMI JU), for more information about the WEB-RADR project, please click here.
