The MHRA is proud to be a key technical partner of the African Union-Smart Safety Surveillance (AU-3S) programme. The long-term goal of AU-3S is to strengthen the safety surveillance of priority medical products across the African continent. AU-3S was launched in 2020 and is funded by the Gates Foundation.
AU-3S aims to address limited health system and safety surveillance capacity across Africa through efficiencies of technological innovation, capacity strengthening, pooling of resources and work sharing.
To achieve these goals, AU-3S focuses on four core solutions:
- Promote electronic safety collection using tools like Med Safety
- Implement and operate a common data integration and signal detection platform
- Establish and manage a multi-country group of safety experts for signal validation
- Facilitate capacity building through creating and training a super-user network for Vigilance Hub
The MHRA supports AU-3S by:
- Facilitating the adoption, implementation, and training for Med Safety tools
- Developing an AEFI reporting form for the Med Safety App
- Hosting the interim Data Integration and Signal Detection System
- Delivering training modules on end-to-end safety surveillance
- Providing support and pharmacovigilance expertise to the AU-3S Joint Signal Management Group
- Supporting the delivery of an African safety database known as AfriVigilance
